NV5 Geospatial

user experience • data visualization • design standards

I was the designer behind NV5 Geospatial's product called INSITE, which is a platform for using geospatial data. I was responsible for overhauling the entire software product suite, designing a functional design library that all products on the platform would adhere to. While building this design library, I was simultaneously updating old concepts, and building entirely new features.

Initially a simple platform to view records of objects found on the map. I completed all of the design required to build INSITE out into a full featured data management platform, including QA/QC, inspection tools, a media library complete with collaboration functions, as well as work order management and inspection tools for inspectors, both at their desktop computer, but also mobile companion apps designed for in-the-field inspection.

This was an exceptionally challenging project. Having no previous experience in the use of geospatial data, I had to simultaneously learn about the industry, create implementable and scalable design standards, all while updating old features and creating new ones. You could say I was driving the train, and building it, while still learning what a train is. The pattern library was a constant project, shifting as needed to facilitate new features, and the technical limitations of our development team. Any updates made needed to be sure they could seamlessly integrate into previous products I had already designed.

Despite the difficulty, I was successful, the updated product and new features were released to universal appreciation from the customers. The challenge was very rewarding, especially once you could see it all together.
